The Day of the Vow?

Do any Afrikaners still believe that the 16th December, the Day of the Vow has real religious significance. I remember going there as a kid on the 16th December and when those gold letters light up ONS VIR JOU SUID AFRIKA with a beam of sunlight it all seems very Biblical. Is there anyone who still truly believes that there is a deeper significance to the Battle of Blood River and the Covenant with the Afrikaner people? Has God turned His face from the Afrikaner, is he punishing him for apartheid or is it all just fantasy?
