Why is meiosis described as two separate divisions? What are the results of meiosis of meiosis in humans?
There are two kinds of division, meiosis and mitosis. Mitosis is used when identical copies are needed. There is only one division of the nucleus, therefore the result is 2 diploid cells. Meiosis is 2 divisions of the nucleus, and there is crossing over of genes for variation. The result is a haploid cell. These are sperm and eggs, otherwise the gametes of humans. They are haploid (N)because the sperm and egg combine to make a diploid (2N) zygote. All of humans other cells are diploid, and thus use mitosis to divide, but meiosis is used in gametogenesis.
