What is the genre of The Scarlet Letter?

I am doing a Major Data Works Sheet on The Scarlet Letter and am having trouble finding the genre of the book. In my opinion I think the genre is historical fiction, but I am not sure if the genre would be a novel. Which leads me to a second question: "Is a novel considered a genre?"
